A Medical Assistant for a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) is a vital healthcare team member who performs clinical and administrative duties to support the delivery of high-quality, comprehensive, and affordable healthcare services to underserved communities. Medical Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring efficient patient care and assisting healthcare providers in meeting the needs of a diverse patient population. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

CLINICAL DUTIES 

  • Prepare patients for examinations, taking vital signs, and recording patients' medical history. 

  • Assist healthcare providers during examinations, treatments, and minor procedures. 

  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens for testing and perform basic laboratory tests as directed by the healthcare provider. 

  • Administer medications and vaccinations as instructed by the healthcare provider. 

  • Provide patient education on health promotion, disease prevention, and self-care. 

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES 

  • Greet patients, answer phone calls, and schedule appointments. 

  • Assist with patient registration, verify insurance information, and update patient records. 

  • Organize and maintain medical records, ensuring the confidentiality and security of patient information. 

  • Perform data entry tasks, such as updating electronic health records (EHR) and inputting patient demographic information. 

COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION 

  • Work closely with healthcare providers, nurses, and other medical staff to ensure the delivery of coordinated patient-centered care. 

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members to facilitate the exchange of information and promote patient satisfaction. 

COMPLIANCE AND SAFETY 

  • Adhere to FQHC guidelines, policies, procedures, and relevant laws and regulations governing practice, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 

  • Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment, following infection control and safety guidelines. 

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

  • Stay current on best practices, industry trends, and continuing education requirements for medical assistants.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

HEALTH EDUCATION AND PROMOTION 

  • Provide culturally appropriate health education and information to individuals and groups in the community, helping them understand and manage their health conditions, adopt healthy behaviors, and navigate the healthcare system. 

  • Conduct outreach activities and facilitate workshops or presentations on health topics relevant to the community, such as nutrition, mental health, and chronic disease management. 

PATIENT ADVOCACY AND NAVIGATION 

  • Assist patients in overcoming barriers to accessing healthcare services, such as language, transportation, or financial issues. 

  • Guide patients through the healthcare system, connecting them with appropriate services and resources and helping them understand their rights and responsibilities as patients. 

CARE COORDINATION AND CASE MANAGEMENT 

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, social workers, and other team members to develop and implement individualized care plans for patients with complex health and social needs. 

  • Monitor patients' progress, provide ongoing support and follow-up, and advocate for patients’ needs within the healthcare system. 

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT 

  • Identify community health needs and priorities, and work with the FQHC and community partners to develop and implement targeted interventions and programs. 

  • Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, such as schools, faith-based organizations, and local government agencies, to foster collaboration and support for community health initiatives. 

CULTURAL COMPETENCY AND DIVERSITY 

  • Serve as a liaison between the FQHC and its diverse communities, promoting cultural understanding and ensuring that healthcare services are responsive to patients' needs, values, and preferences. 

  • Provide feedback and guidance to the FQHC on strategies to enhance cultural competency, reduce health disparities, and improve patient satisfaction. 

DATA COLLECTION AND REPORTING
